Scary, Gross, and Weird - it's October!

There are some pretty weird stories in the Bible. Some of them you may have heard, others you may not have. Join us this month as we examine some Scary, Gross, and Weird Stories from the Bible.

October 3, 5-7pm: What words would you use to describe God? The truth is that God’s character is perfect. Join us as we examine God’s character in a weird story where God literally turns someone into salt. We will also be doing our highway cleanup this day, so please sign up if you are available to help. We pick up trash on an almost 2 mile stretch of Route 3. We will meet at the church at 2:30, pick up trash, and then get ice cream before coming to youth group. Ice cream will be paid for by the youth group.

October 10, 5-7pm: Did you think the movie Shrek created the idea of a talking donkey? Would you be surprised to know that there is actually a talking donkey in the Bible? It’s true! Join us this week as we look at the story of Balaam and the donkey that had a message for him.

October 17, 5-7pm: Everyday we make choices. Some are small choices like what to eat or what to wear, others are much larger choices. But big or small our choices impact our lives. Join us this week in a discussion about choices and consequences using a story about God, Daniel, and King Belshazzar.

October 24, 3-8pm: We will go to the Columbus Crew game for Faith and Family night. We will meet at the church at 3:00 and go to Crew stadium for the game at 4. Following the game there will be a chance to hear testimonies from Crew players, and there will also be a concert from American Idol contestant Phil Stacey. My best estimate is that we will return to the church around 8pm. For youth who have attended 2 of the 3 meetings in October, tickets are $10, for other youth they are $20. The deadline to sign up is October 13 so that I can order presale tickets.

October 31, 5-7:30pm: Movie night at the church. The movie is to be determined, but will be rated G or PG. Youth group will be from 5-7:30 this night to allow time for the movie following dinner.

Other upcoming events:
November 5-6: District lock-in Ashland.
January 14-16: Retreat
February 4-6: Super Bowl sub sale
February 27: Youth will lead worship at all 3 services.
A guys lock-in, a girl’s lock-in, and a whole group lock-in are also in the works. Dates to be determined.

New beginnings

School is starting and so is a new year of youth group. When starting anything new, it is always important to start the right way. In August the focus will be on celebrating the new beginning, and in getting to know each other. Then in September, we will be talking about prayer, which is very important for any good beginning. Join us as we explore this important topic.

Sunday August 22, 5-8pm: Youth group kick-off. All youth entering 6th-12th grade and their families are invited to attend this celebration of a the beginning of a new year of youth group. This will be at the picnic shelter (lower level as the rain location). Meat, drinks, and table service will be provided; families are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share.

Sunday August 29, 5-7pm: This will be the first youth group of the year at regular time. After dinner, the focus will be on getting to know each other through a variety of games and team-building activities.

September 5, 5-7pm: There are many people in our lives, and one thing we do to show we care is pray for them. Join us in our discussions of how and why we pray for the people around us.

September 6, 8am-4pm: Labor Day fundraisers. We will have parking at the church as well as a Lemon Shake stand on the square. Last year we had challenges with getting enough people, so please sign up as soon as possible. Adult and youth help is greatly appreciated. All shifts are 2 hours, and parking is from 8-2 and the lemon shakes are from 10-4.

September 12, 5-7pm: We live in a society where we have a lot, and yet it seems like people around us always have more. Join us this week as we talk about how to differentiate between our wants and our needs in our prayer life.

September 19, 5-7pm: Have you ever wondered why some prayers get answered and others never seem to? Come to youth group this week as we discuss this important topic.

September 26, 12:15-7:00pm: Each year canoeing is a popular youth group trip. Join us this year. Youth should eat lunch before they come, or bring a lunch to eat on the way there. People who attended at least 3 of the above events can canoe for free. Others should bring $10. We will stop for ice cream in Mt. Vernon on the way back at no cost to youth. This is also the deadline to sign up for SonFest (more information below).

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill’, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
James 2:14-18

We spent the month of January talking about faith, but faith is about more than just what we believe – faith is about what we do. This month we are going to focus on how our service and our faith connect, and how serving others can allow us to share Jesus’ love.

SCHEDULE

February 14: Parents night out. We will be babysitting so that parents can go out to dinner without children. We are babysitting from 5-8, so youth should plan to be here from 4:30-8:30 for prep and clean-up. There will be pizza for dinner.

February 21: Regular meeting from 5-7. We will be discussing the role of evangelism is our service activities. Dinner is at 5 in the dining room.

February 26-27: 30-hour famine at the church. Eat lunch at school and then we will fast for 30 hours. Come to the church after school. We will have a lock-in and various activities including a service project and bowling. The event will close on Saturday night with a parent appreciation dinner.

February 28: No youth group. Sleep, do homework, and recover from the famine 

December Youth News

In our culture, we have intertwined the birth stories from Matthew and Luke to the point that we don’t even realize which parts are in which book. This month we will take a look at the birth narrative from these two perspectives, with a special emphasis on how Luke focuses on Mary and Matthew focuses on Joseph. And then we’ll close off the month with a Christmas party.

December 5: Breakfast with Santa. Youth are encouraged to volunteer in this wonderful ministry our church offers to the community. Please sign up to help!

December 6: Regular meeting from 5-7. We will begin by looking at the book of Luke and Mary’s portion of the birth story. Youth are encouraged to read Luke 1:26-38 before our meeting.

December 13: Regular meeting from 5-7. We will continue our study of the birth story by looking at the book of Matthew and Joseph’s role. Youth are encouraged to read Matthew 1:18-25 before our meeting.

December 20: We will have a Christmas party during our regular meeting time of 5-7. We will have pizza for dinner, make graham cracker houses, and have a white elephant gift exchange. Youth should bring a wrapped gift of something they no longer want from home, or something that costs less than $5. See Katy with questions.

December 27: No youth group. Enjoy time with your family.

**There may be other events happening over Christmas break, so watch your email and the chronicle for more information**

Other upcoming events to put on your calendar:

January 15-17: Retreat at Oglebay in West Virginia. Cost for each youth is $35, but talk to Katy if that is an issue. Deadline to sign up for retreat is January 10.

February 26-27: Famine lock-in at the church.

March 19-20: Girls night lock-in at the church. The schedule for this is still being worked out, but I am aware there is a middle school dance that Friday. The first portion of the event will be for high schoolers only. There will also be a portion for mothers on Saturday. The event will end mid-afternoon Saturday.
**Plans for a guys night are also in the works but no date has been set yet**
